The Iconic 2000’s Velour Tracksuits

Remember when we couldn't get enough of velour tracksuits? The 2000’s were an interesting period for fashion. The velour tracksuit was worn running errands and even to red carpet events becoming an icon of the Y2K trends.

At the time, the peak TMZ world, you couldn't pick up a magazine without seeing a celebrity in a velour tracksuit. Paris Hilton, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, the list goes on. Adaptable, affordable and comfortable, the velour tracksuit epitomised subtle luxurious causal wear.

In the 1980’s velour tracksuits had become commonplace, at least with men. Even James Bond briefly wore a navy velour FILA tracksuit in the 1985 film. A View To Kill, but the 2000’s era of velour was certainly for the ladies.

Juicy Couture and Baby Phat are the first names that come to mind. With their ultra-feminine colourways, plush fabrics, rhinestones and bedazzled accents, ladies had found loungewear they could wear outdoors and still look trendy. Baby Phats’s signature look was the baby pink colourway with rhinestones which feminised the traditionally masculine outfit. When Juicy Couture debuted their tracksuit in 2001 and with the help of celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashai with their flip phones and matching handbags, the women’s velour tracksuit became an instant success. Instead of being on runway shows, the paparazzi caught celebrities in Juicy Couture doing mundane activities. Except Lindsay Lohan bravely wore a green rendition of the Juicy Couture tracksuit on the red carpet. The baby pink colorway of the Juicy tracksuit remains the most iconic and there is that memorable image of Kim Kardashian sprawled across the front of a white Range Rover while wearing the baby pink.

The youger generation continue to turn to nostalgic elements to bring them comfort and style and it is no surprise that since the pandemic, consumers have turned to loungwear to feel comfy at home. Even luxury brands such as Palm Angels, Gucci and Balenciaga now have velour iterations mixing a sporty and high-end feel to their loungewear. With Juicy Couture making a comeback and new brands reworking the velour tracksuit or using the velour accent in subtle details, the velour tracksuit has taken a new form adding luxury to the iconic garment.
